London 2012 Olympic Football Tournament Draw Made


The draws for the London 2012 Olympic Football Tournament took place at Wembley Stadium today (Tuesday 24 April) confirming the Group Stages for the men’s and women’s tournaments.

The draws for the London 2012 Olympic FootballTournament took place at Wembley Stadium today (Tuesday 24 April) confirming the Group Stages for the men’s and women’s tournaments.
*Global stars take part in official draw event at Wembley Stadium
*Stuart Pearce’s Team GB’s men drawn against Senegal, Uruguay and United Arab Emirates and Hope Powell’s women placed in a group with New Zealand, Cameroon and Brazil
*Spain to play Japan in their first game while Brazil will take on Egypt
Brazilian legend, and a former Olympic bronze medalist at the Atlanta 1996 Games, Ronaldo, was one of several figures from the world of football who conducted the draw which saw Stuart Pearce’s Team GB’s men drawn against Senegal, Uruguay and United Arab Emirates and Hope Powell’s women placed in a group with New Zealand, Cameroon and Brazil .
Other highlights in the men’s tournament saw Spain drawn against Japan, Morocco and Honduras while Brazil will take on Egypt, Belarus and New Zealand. In the women’s tournament, USA, gold medallists in 2008, will face Columbia, France and North Korea and Japan, winners of the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup, were matched with Canada, Sweden and South Africa.
The tournament will kick off two days before the London 2012 Opening Ceremony when Team GB women play New Zealand at the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff. With matches being played at venues across the UK the tournaments represent a fantastic opportunity for football fans to see the world’s best players in the women’s tournament and some of the stars of tomorrow in the men’s tournament.
LOCOG Chair Seb Coe said: “Now that the draws for the Olympic Football Tournament have taken place, fans can begin to get excited about the amazing spectacle, the incredible teams and world class players – in both the men’s and women’s tournaments – that will be coming to Great Britain this summer.
“With matches taking place across England as well as in Scotland and Wales, and with tickets still available, football also provides people with a unique opportunity to still enjoy the Olympic experience this summer.”
Tickets for the football tournament will go on sale in early May.
