Day 42: Olympic Flame to Travel on the Heights of Abraham Cable Car and Visit Chatsworth House on Journey From Nottingham to Derby

On Friday 29 June, the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay – presented by Coca-Cola, Lloyds TSB and Samsung – will travel 112.40 miles through 12 communities on its journey from Nottingham to Derby.

On Friday 29 June, the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay – presented by Coca-Cola, Lloyds TSB and Samsung – will travel 112.40 miles through 12 communities on its journey from Nottingham to Derby.

• Today ( 29 June) the Relay will travel 112.40 miles
• 98 Torchbearers will carry the Flame, including 1948 Boxing Olympian Donald Scott and World Superbike champion James Toseland
• Evening celebration to take place at Darley Abbey Park, Derby

The Relay will travel through the following communities: Nottingham, Newstead, Glapwell, Bolsover, Calow, Chesterfield, Matlock, Darley Dale, Bakewell, Buxton, Ashbourne, Derby.

Highlights for today include:

8.14am – Nottingham Castle. The first Torchbearer of the day is Barbara Green, 58, from the Clifton Estate, Nottingham. Barbara will carry the flame through the grounds of Nottingham Castle to the Robin Hood Statue. Barbara was nominated by Nottingham City Council though the LOCOG campaign. She has volunteered in the local community for many years helping young people, particularly those with special educational needs.

10.33am – Newstead Abbey. The flame will be carried through the grounds of Newstead Abbey by Samuel Van de Schootbrugge, 19, from Nottingham. Samuel was nominated by Lloyds TSB as an Olympic hopeful. Samuel, who held a 200m individual swimming medley record, was selected because of his commitment and dedication to his sport of swimming and inspiring his peers through coaching and giving presentations to younger swimmers in his community. Samuel is an athlete on the Lloyds TSB Local Heroes programme.

2.20pm - The Flame will be carried on the Heights of Abraham Cable Car by Dominick Cunningham. Dominick, a last minute replacement to Team GB for the 2011 European Youth Olympic Games, got off to a fantastic start by taking the Gymnastics Team silver with teammates Frank Baines and Courtney Tulloch with a combined to score 164.950 just behind Russia with 165.400 and ahead of Switzerland – 163.700. At Youth Commonwealth Games later that summer Cunningham was the most successful gymnast in Games winning three Golds, one Silver and a Bronze.

3.37pm - Chatsworth House, Bakewell. The Torch will be carried through the grounds of Chatsworth House by Ben Hope, 17, of Buxton. Buxton Park Bowling Club nominated Ben through Samsung’s campaign, in recognition of his fund-raising efforts. He cycled 150 miles across England in 2009, raising £1,500 to support the work of two local neonatal Intensive care Units and a neonatal transport team who were involved with the life-saving care of his three year old sister, when she was born three months premature. In 2010 he cycled 250 miles across Scotland, raising £350 towards the refurbishment of the Bowling Club. This year, he and two of his friends, have cycled across England, again, raising £1,000 for Help For Heroes.

Ben will hand the Flame in front of Chatsworth House to Helen Hopkinson, 33, from Nottingham who was nominated through the LOCOG campaign. Helen gives her time to a number of cancer charities and in 2010 she was signed up as a Cancer Campaigns Ambassador for Cancer Research UK. Towards the end of 2010 Helen met with her MP to discuss the importance of early detection of cancer and asked that he speak to the Secretary of State for Health on the issue. Following this campaign (involving over 70 Ambassadors) extra funding was secured for early diagnosis as well as a commitment to record diagnosis data more consistently.

7.20pm – Darley Abbey Park, Derby, Evening Celebration. The final Torchbearer of the day will be James Toseland, 31. James, who is Donington Park’s official ambassador for the 2012 race and track day season, was the youngest ever World Superbike Champion at 23. He is two times World Superbike Champion and retired from racing in 2011 due to injury. He is one of Britain’s most successful motorcycle racers.

The evening celebration will take place in Darley Abbey Park will feature a variety of entertainment staged by LOCOG and the three Presenting Partners of the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay - Coca-Cola, Lloyds TSB and Samsung - with support from Derby City Council. The evening will begin at 5.30pm and finish by 8pm.

The line-up includes music from Loick Essien, a dance troupe who will provide a unique fusion of street performance, theatre and sport and dance act Twist and Pulse.

Towards the end of the show the final torchbearer of the day, James Toseland, will light a celebration cauldron on stage at the event which will enable the Olympic Flame to be seen by the audience.

Torchbearer Highlights

Barbara Green, 58, from Nottingham and carrying the Flame in Nottingham. Born in Nottingham, Barbara, who was nominated by Nottingham City Council through the LOCOG campaign, has lived on the Clifton Estate since 1961 and has always been involved in her local community. When her boys were younger, Barbara became a parent volunteer at Swansdown Infants followed by Milford Junior School. Barbara also ran a Girls Brigade Company at the local Methodist Church for many years and was the secretary for the Clifton Carnival Committee as well as helping to set up the Clifton Comets Motorcycle Club. Having volunteered for 6 years at Brinkhill Primary she moved to Farnborough Secondary School she was offered the support teacher role that she currently holds. She commenced running a Duke of Edinburgh project at the school in her own time, providing additional sessions for young people with special educational needs.

Kaylet Smedley, 80, will carry the flame in Bolsover. Kaylet was selected through the LOCOG public nomination campaign. She has been the chairperson of the Derbyshire branch of the Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research Fund since 1968. Kaylet started the branch following the death of her son Andrew, who was eight years old, from Leukaemia. Under Kaylet`s leadership the Derbyshire branch has raised over £1 million for Leukaemia and Lymphoma research. Despite advancing years she remains a vigorous organiser and an inspiration to her team of volunteers.

David Raizada, 60, from Chesterfield, will carry the flame in Bolsover. David was nominated through the Lloyds TSB public nomination campaign. He set up and runs The Youth of Barlborough Club (YOB). In the six years since the project’s inception almost 500 different young people in the age range 8 to 16 have attended. David is also chair of the local Sports Action Group which promotes all age sports participation across the community.

Katy Wilson, 16, from Nottingham, will carry the Flame in Calow. Nominated through the Samsung campaign for not letting her Cystic Fibrosis stop her playing tennis every day. She has represented Derbyshire, reaching number on in the county for Under 16s. Her aim is to become a tennis coach and she already helps train younger players at her club. She never complains about her condition or expects special treatment – many of the other players don’t even realise that she has Cystic Fibrosis.

Joel Knight, 16, is carrying the Flame in Chesterfield. Teenage swimming sensation Joel Knight set a new personal best in claiming the 1500m freestyle title in Turkey at the 2011 European Youth Olympic Festival, nearly ten seconds ahead of his nearest challenger. Prior to the Festival, he came an incredible fourth in the 1500m freestyle at the British Swimming Championships in Manchester in March last year, behind race winner Olympic silver medallist David Davies. That swim made him the fastest 1500m swimmer for his age in British history.

Donald Scott, 83, from Derby is an inspirational Boxing Olympian having competed in the 1948 Olympic Games which was the first Games after World War II, with very little support or resource to do so. Donald who is carrying the Flame in Derby won the silver medal at Light Heavyweight. He subsequently won the Empire Games gold medal in Auckland. He served in the Royal Military Police during national service. He boxed professionally as a heavyweight and was managed by Bob Curley. He was a big enough name from his amateur career to box in London at the Albert Hall. He continued his interest in boxing in the Derby area and was involved in coaching. He regularly attended both amateur and professional boxing events in Derby and preferred to sit quietly at the back rather than be presented in the ring.

Last November LOCOG launched a grassroots programme inviting the nations Local Leaders to step forward and start planning local celebrations to celebrate the spirit of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Today there are over 14,000 London 2012 Local Leaders across the country planning community events to Line the Streets for the Olympic Torch Relay.

In the East Midlands 649 people have signed up as Local Leaders, like John Coulson from Matlock, Derbyshire. John has organised for six A-Level Art students from Highfield School, with help from local artist Tess Willoughby, to design and paint a mural wall of Olympic sports at the top of the Heights of Abraham cable car attraction. This will be unveiled to the public at 2:30pm on Friday as the Torch is carried by one of the Torchbearers, 17 year old gymnast Dominick Cunningham to the summit on one of the cable cars. People are advised to catch the cable car before 1:30pm to ensure they make the summit for this occasion. 130 inspirational Torchbearers will carry the Flame through the following communities: Edinburgh, Duddingston, Musselburgh, Dalkeith, Lasswade, Loanhead, Bilston, Milton Bridge, Penicuik, Eddleston, Peebles, Innerleithen, Walkerburn, Selkirk, Galashiels, Earlston, Gordon, Greenlaw, Duns, Chirnside, Foulden, Berwick-Upon-Tweed, Bamburgh and Alnwick.

Highlights for today include:

7.08am – The first Torchbearer of the day will be Raquel Matos, 16, from Edinburgh, will start with the Flame at the Edinburgh Live Site in Festival Square. Raquel was nominated for her achievements inswimming and for being an excellent role model as a potential Olympian of the future.

7.30am – Sally Hyder, 49, from Edinburgh, will carry the Flame to the front of the Scottish Parliament building. Sally was nominated through the LOCOG public nomination campaign for her determination in battling MS and all the work that she has done to promote Canine Partners who helped to turn her life around.

9.53am – Lauren Wales, 13, from Blaydon on Tyne, will carry the Flame on a bike through Loanhead. She was nominated for her dedication to dancing which resulted in her being part of the team that won the World Irish Dancing Championships in 2011.

12.49pm – Sean Walls, 37, from East Kilbride, will carry the Flame on horseback in Selkirk. He was nominated for setting up Sight Aid International which offers free eye tests and glasses to people in Kenya.

Thomas Holligan, 18, from Edinburgh, will carry the Flame to the Forest Pitch. Thomas was nominated after a gold and silver in the European Youth Olympic Festival.

6.10pm – Brian Tinnion, 51, from Ponteland, will carry the Flame into Bamburgh Castle. Brian was nominated through the LOCOG public nomination campaign for his for his work as an operational fire fighter and the key role he plays in the local community.

The evening celebration will take place in Alnwick Castle Pastures in front of the magnificent Medieval Castle of Alnwick which featured in the Harry Potter movies.

The evening celebration will feature a variety of entertainment staged by LOCOG and the three Presenting Partners of the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay - Coca-Cola, Lloyds TSB and Samsung - with support from Northumberland County Council. The show will start at 5.30pm.

The line-up includes music from Little Comets, a dance troupe who will provide a unique fusion of street performance, theatre and sport and dance act Twist and Pulse. There will also be entertainment from local acts staged by Northumberland County Council.

Towards the end of the two-hour show, the last Torchbearer of the day will light a celebration cauldron on stage at the event which will enable the Olympic Flame to be seen by the audience.

Torchbearer highlights:

Allan Wells, 60, from Edinburgh, will carry the Flame in Selkirk. He won a gold medal in the 100m at the 1980 Olympics in Moscow, becoming the oldest Olympic 100m champion at that time.

Chris Paterson, 34, from Edinburgh, will carry the Flame in Galashiels. Chris Paterson is the most capped Scotsman in the history of the game. In a stellar 12-year international career, Paterson wrote his name into the annals of Scottish Rugby by breaking just about every conceivable record.

Lynn Mccafferty, 33, from Cumbernauld, will carry the Flame in Selkirk. An inspirational captain who has dedicated her life to play handball at the highest level she possibly could, making huge sacrifices along the way. She always gives 100% in everything she does and is a great ambassador for the sport. She is very active in trying to develop the sport back home in Scotland and is committed to seeing the Olympic legacy carry on north of the border once the games are over, with Lynn playing a major role in that. She leads by example, is so brave on court, with a never say die attitude and always fighting till the last minute. She has served British Handball well for over 15 years and thoroughly deserves to be recognised for her contribution to this developing sport.

Kenneth Reid, 52, from North Berwick, will carry the Flame in Musselburgh. Ken was nominated through the LOCOG public nomination campaign for the work that he does in helping organisations to be more open and accessible to people with disabilities.

Louis Gallo, 45, from Knoxville, will carry the Flame in Edinburgh. He was selected through the Samsung campaign. He has made an impact on the lives of so many students at West High School. He dedicates many hours out of his day to be our sponsor for the Youth in Government programs, which we look forward to every year, and he also takes us to Boston to attend Harvard Model Congress. He has won numerous awards such as West High Teacher of the Year (2003), East TN Teacher of the Year (2007-08), Knox County Teacher of the Year (2007-08), and Milken National Educator Award (2003-04).

John Steede, 70, from Jedburgh, will carry the Flame in Selkirk. He was nominated through Bank of Scotland's public nomination campaign. He set up a running school in the late 1970s and over the past four decades has coached many a young athlete to victory. He is a six-time Great British Champion and is still training the youth of Jedburgh as well as competing himself.

The evening celebrations that will be staged by Samsung in 66 towns and cities throughout the Olympic Flame’s journey across the UK, will allow Samsung to entertain the community they are visiting. The Samsung caravan, complete with LED screen on the side showcasing runners and goodwill messages, will follow the Torchbearers around the UK cheering up everyone to celebrate the Torch Relay with music and interaction with local communities. It is Samsung’s ambition that London 2012 will be an event that reaches and involves more people than on any other Olympic Games occasion.

On Friday 8th June, the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay – presented by Coca-Cola, Lloyds TSB and Samsung – will travel 128 miles through 22 communities on its journey from Stranraer to Glasgow.

128 inspirational Torchbearers will carry the Flame through the following communities: Stranraer, Cairnryan, Ballantrae, Girvan, Turnberry, Maidens, Kirkoswald, Maybole, Alloway, Ayr, Kilmarnock, Kilmaurs, Stewarton, Dunlop, Barrmill, Beith, Lochwinnoch, Kilmalcolm, Port Glasgow, Rutherglen, Giffnock and Glasgow.

Highlights for today are:

6.09am – The first Torchbearer in Scotland will be Ross Mcclelland, 21, from Ayr. He will start with the Flame in Castle Square, Stranraer. Ross serves in the British Army and returned from a seven month tour of duty earlier this year. Ross is an infantry soldier who loves every minute of his service. One of Ross' dreams has actually been to become a long-distance runner and compete in the Olympics.

9.41am – Robert Burns Birthplace Museum. Kirsty Kane, 17, from Saltcoats, will carry the Flame to the front of the museum. Kirsty was nominated through the Bank of Scotland campaign for her courage and determination in dealing with her cerebral palsy. Kirsty will hand the Flame to Olympian Suzanne Otterson, 38, from Ayr, who represented Great Britain in the figure skating at the Albertville Winter Olympics in 1992. She was nominated through the Coca Cola campaign.

At 4.27pm in Hampden Park, the Flame will be carried by Karen Woodrow, 44, from Renfrew, who was nominated through the Coca Cola campaign. She was nominated by her colleagues for her hard work and great spirit.

5.43pm - Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum. The Flame will be carried to the front of the museum in a lantern by trials cyclist Daniel MacAskill, 26, from Glasgow.

6.50pm – The last Torchbearer of the day will be Ross Morrison, 18, from Auchinleck, who was nominated through the Coca Cola campaign. He was nominated because of his dream of becoming a professional basketball player and to set up a fund to help young people that are in a similar situation as him.

The evening celebration will take place in George Square, Glasgow and is presented by Coca Cola. The line-up includes music from Eliza Doolittle, Emeli Sande and General Fiasco. The show will start at 4pm.

Towards the end of the two-hour show, the last Torchbearer of the day in Glasgow - Ross Morrison - will light a celebration cauldron on stage at the event which will enable the Olympic Flame to be seen by the audience.

Other Torchbearer highlights:

Actor James McAvoy, 33, from Glasgow, will carry the Flame in Glasgow. He is best known for films such as X Men: First Class, Wanted, The Last King of Scotland and Atonement. He won the inaugural Orange BAFTA Rising Star Award in 2006, he has subsequently been nominated for BAFTA and Golden Globe Awards for his performance in Atonement. James recently finished filming on Filth, a film adaptation of Irvine Welsh's novel of the same name and he will shortly start filming on The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby.

Olympian Katherine Grainger, 36, from Glasgow, will carry the Flame in Glasgow. She is three-time Olympic medallist and Bank of Scotland ambassador, selected because of her contribution to her sport and inspiring young people in the community to take up more sport as part of Bank of Scotland National School Sport Week.    

Olympian Rhona Martin, 45, from Ayr, will carry the Flame in Glasgow. Rhona skipped the British curling team to victory at the Salt Lake City 2002 Olympic Winter Games. It came down to the very last stone, which Rhona held her nerve and delivered perfectly to secure a narrow 4-3 win for Team GB. Rhona, her team of Scottish curlers and the aptly named “Stone of Destiny” went on to become sporting icons. This success was achieved despite the fact the team were all in full-time jobs or full-time mothers, only becoming full-time curlers for the four months leading up to the Games. Rhona is still involved with curling, predominantly as the Scottish junior curling coach where she can give back to the sport and use her experiences to inspire others. Rhona is also involved with UK Sport’s elite coaching programme, and worked as a commentator for the BBC during Vancouver 2010.

Olympian Susann Goksør Bjerkrheim, 60, from Oslo, will carry the Flame in Glasgow. She was selected through the Samsung campaign. Susann was one of the key players on the Norwegian women´s handball team from the late 80s until the millennium. She has played the most international games for Norway and has participated in several Olympics, winning the silver medal in Seoul 1998, silver in Barcelona 1992 and bronze in Sydney in 2000.

Ian Mirfin (53) and Janice Eaglesham (53), from Cambuslang, will both carry the Flame in Glasgow. The husband and wife team won the BBC Sports Unsung Hero award last year for their dedication to athletics coaching for people with disabilities. They are the founders, organisers and coaches of The Red Star Athletics Club in Glasgow which was formed in 1990.

Alan Jardine, 25, from Kilmarnock, will carry the Flame in Kilmarnock. He was selected through the LOCOG public nomination campaign. He has Down ’s syndrome but has accomplished much in his young life. He has won medals at the special Olympics for swimming and swims in the Down’s Syndrome British and European championships. He was awarded East Ayrshire Councils disabled sports person of the year in 2009 and loves travelling having visited France, Spain, Poland, Australia, New Zealand and Fiji. At College he studied IT and Business and completed challenges with the Princes Trust. He is at present doing voluntary work with the WRVS at our local hospital. He is an inspiration to his family and friends.

James Sweeney, 21, from Glasgow, will carry the Flame in Glasgow. He was selected through the Coca-Cola Future Flames programme. He has been working with the G15 Youth Group since he was 17. The group gives support to young people aged 12-25 in the G15 postcode of Glasgow by providing one to one support to help them get their lives back on track. This is done through cooking classes, music groups, gardening projects and much more. They work alongside the police and local schools to maximise the benefit for the whole community. The youth group was recently awarded the Queens award for voluntary service and as a result were invited to the Queens Garden Party in July and Jamie now holds the Chairman position on the management committee. Jamie makes a real difference to these young and vulnerable people through his hard work and determination to better himself and those around him. Jamie is only 21 years old and fully understands how these young people feel as he had a difficult childhood himself. He now not only is supporting himself in his own flat, but is also helping to support his sister and her two young children.

Day 14: Olympic Flame to Visit Knowsley Safari Park and Cross The Mersey on Journey from Bolton to Liverpool

On Friday 1 June, the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay – presented by Coca-Cola, Lloyds TSB and Samsung – will travel from Bolton to Liverpool. The Olympic Flame will travel 93.82 miles through 17 communities.

On Friday 1 June, the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay – presented by Coca-Cola, Lloyds TSB and Samsung – will travel from Bolton to Liverpool. The Olympic Flame will travel 93.82 miles through 17 communities. 

• On Day 14 the Relay will travel 93.82 miles
• 157 inspirational Torchbearers will carry the Flame
• Evening celebration to take place at the Pierhead

157 Torchbearers will carry the Flame before it arrives at the Evening Celebration in Liverpool where a cauldron will be lit to mark the culmination of the day’s festivities. After the celebrations have finished, the Flame will be transferred to a lantern and it will stay in Liverpool overnight.

On Day 14 the Flame will be carried through the following communities:
Bolton, Horwich, Chorley, Euxton, Croston, Burscough, Ormskirk, Southport, Ainsdale, Formby, Crosby, St Helen’s, Huyton, Knotty Ash, Old Swan, Birkenhead and Liverpool.

The first Torchbearer of the day will be Antony Evitts, 16, from Bolton, who was nominated by Bolton Council for his excellence in swimming, will set off from the steps of the City Hall. Antony has represented the England Talent Programme from a young age, and has realised successes both regionally and nationally. From age 11 he has been ranked in the top six in Great Britain in four events. His biggest achievement to date is qualifying for two events in the 2010 British Championships, where he competed against the best swimmers in Great Britain. Antony is committed to his education at Canon Slade School and effectively manages both his sporting and academic career. Alongside his studies, he trains on a nationally acclaimed swimming programme which involves nine swimming and two gym sessions per week. Antony won the Bolton Sport and Physical Activity Award (BOSPAA) for Sports Achiever of the Year in 2010. His long term goal is to represent Great Britain at the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil.

During the day the Flame will visit a number of iconic landmarks. Highlights include:

Anthony Gormley’s Another Place, Crosby. The Flame will be carried to Another Place by Jessica Wade, 15, from Liverpool, who was nominated in the LOCOG public nomination campaign for her time and dedication given to animals in need. The Flame will then be carried along Another Place by three different Torchbearers. Receiving the Flame from Jessica will be Paul Mcevoy, 25, Liverpool, who was selected through Coca Cola for the time and dedication that he gives to young people. Paul will then hand the Flame to Richard Webster, 45, from The Wirral, who was selected through Lloyds TSB for his efforts raising money for charities. Richard will then hand the Flame to Francis Meadows, 53, Liverpool, who was selected through Lloyds TSB for his 25 years of work at Crosby Stuart Junior Football.

Aintree Racecourse. Kimberley Cooper, 22, from Liverpool, who was nominated through the LOCOG campaign, will carry the Flame through the grandstands and out onto the racecourse. Kim was the ‘Legend’ vinspired National Award Winner for 2011. The award recognises someone who has successfully led a team of volunteers to make a difference. Kim volunteered at Leeds University as a Project Co-ordinator for ‘Green Streets’, a project that stops re-usable items left by students in their halls of residence ending up in a landfill. Over two years she led her team to divert over 50 tonnes of re-usable material and created over 3,000 hours of volunteering for her team. She grew ‘Green Streets’ into a city-wide scheme bringing in multiple partnerships, including Leeds City Council, local community groups and other Universities.

Knowsley Safari Park, Prescot. The Flame will be carried around Knowsley Safari Park by Jane Campbell, 36, from Liverpool, who was selected through Lloyds TSB for her work in starting and running a Seniors Lunch Club in one of the most deprived areas of the country. This will include a visit to the Elephant Enclosure and the Giraffe Platform.

The Mersey Ferry, Birkenhead. The Flame will be carried into the jetty by Rebecca Blacklock, 19, from The Wirral, who was selected through Lloyds TSB for her dedication and commitment to voluntary work in the area. She will then hand the Flame to Craig Lundberg, 26, from Liverpool who will carry the Flame onto the ferry for the crossing across the Mersey. Craig was blinded whilst on service in Iraq in 2007 when a rocket propelled grenade blew in his face. Since his injuries Craig has, amongst many other things, played for the England blind football team, climbed Mount Kilimanjaro for the Help the Heroes charity, worked in the community giving inspirational speeches to children and is a support to other wounded servicemen, he is also hoping to participate in the Paralympics in the GB blind football team. Despite his injuries Craig has a fighting spirit and doesn’t let anything get in his way, he has taken it in his stride turned it into a positive and become a role model for other people in a similar situation.

Other Torchbearers during the day will include:

Chris Boardman, 43, from West Kirby, will be carrying the Flame in Birkenhead. Chris Boardman MBE exploded onto the international cycling scene, and captured the British public’s imagination by winning the individual pursuit at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. Chris went on to win two world titles on the track, three stages of the Tour de France and set numerous world records including the gruelling hour record shortly before his retirement from cycling in 2000. Chris has always been linked with cutting edge technology and his knowledge and experience became invaluable as he led British Cycling’s research and development team in the run up to the 2008 Beijing Olympics, where they became the most successful British sporting team of all time. Outside of cycling, Chris ran the 2009 London Marathon for the National Autistic Society and launched the 5km Santa Dash on behalf of the Hoylake Cottage community hospital in West Kirby. Chris is truly an inspirational figure in the history of British sport.

Mel C, 38, London, will be carrying the Flame in Birkenhead. She has been part of one of the most successful Girl Bands of all time, The Spice Girls, and has since forged a name for herself as a sole artist achieving over 3 million album sales, two number 1 singles, six top 10 singles and over 200 combined weeks on the UK chart. Melanie has given a lot of time to various charities including Sport Relief where she has helped raise awareness of people in need in the UK and Worldwide. Melanie is a keen gymnast and dancer and is dedicated to making a difference to people's lives.

Cameron Small, 14, Preston, will be carrying the Flame in Southport. He has inspired so many young and old by his brave fight against a life threatening blood illness. This has included over 900 visits to hospital and harsh, painful treatments including four courses of chemotherapy and many others that have now made him a insulin dependent diabetic. Despite all this, from the age of four he has been an inspirational fundraiser, raising money to help other children and to make their time in hospital easier. He has so far raised an incredible £115000 by organising things from simple raffles to mass sandcastle builds and has even sat in a bath of beans for hours. When he heard his beloved children’s hospital was to close and an appeal was being launched to raise £20 million in just three years he decided that he must get involved and so three years later after many adventures and hard work, Cameron gave a speech at a gala celebration dinner thanking everyone who was involved for their efforts and that the total had been reached. For all his efforts, Cameron was made the first young ambassador for the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital and has since been awarded many awards from the Children’s Champion to the Pride of Britain. He accepts them on behalf of all the other brave children and his moving speeches have had rooms full of celebrities in tears. Cameron has always wanted to be an Olympian and to carry the Olympic torch would mean that a brave and inspirational boys dream would have come true.

Stephanie Millward, 30, Swansea, will be carrying the Flame in Huyton. She was selected through the Coca-Cola Future Flames programme. Stephanie has always had a passion and love of sports not just because they are fun but also because they allow everyone the chance to work together which she feels is very important. Stephanie swims 9 sessions a week along with two gym sessions which allow her to compete for Great Britain which she enjoys. Stephanie hopes to compete and medal in seven events in London2012 and she hopes to continue teaching young children to swim.

Paul Hardaker, 41 from Liverpool, will be carrying the Flame in Ormskirk. He was nominated through the Lloyds TSB public nomination campaign. He is a long term Crohn's Disease sufferer and has recently sailed single-handedly around the UK, meeting sufferers at every port, to raise money for the Crohn's and colitis foundation.

Joseph Shaw, 17, from Kirkby, will be carrying the Flame in Huyton. Joe has two younger sisters who both have special needs and despite his young age Joe is a constant source of help to his family, often acting as a carer for his sisters. He helps out as a junior leader with local kids clubs and also helps at TANGO – a local community group helping people come together.

The line-up includes music from The Wombats, a dance troupe who will provide a unique fusion of street performance, theatre and sport and dance act Twist and Pulse. There will also be entertainment from local acts staged by Liverpool City Council.

The Olympic Torch Relay will also include exciting moments with extreme heights, high speeds and breath-taking spectacles and the Flame will be travelling by different methods of transport including horseback, bicycle, tram and steam-train. Every county in England and every Local Authority area in Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales will host the Olympic Flame, with visits reaching as far north as Lerwick in Scotland to St Helier in the south, Lowestoft in the east and Enniskillen in the west. Many thousands of people are expected to welcome the Olympic Flame along the route each day and celebrate the achievements of the Torchbearers in parks, squares and streets right around the UK.

The convoy travelling with the Flame consists of 14 core vehicles, including a pilot car, Torchbearer drop-off and pick-up shuttles, Presenting Partner vehicles, a media vehicle, a command car and security vehicles. The lead convoy, including the Presenting Partner vehicles, will provide entertainment for the crowds. The Torchbearer will follow some 5 to 7 minutes later.

A crew of approximately 350 people will be working each day of the Relay. Core teams of LOCOG staff, the Metropolitan Police Torch Security Team, Presenting Partners, host Police Forces and host Local Authorities will be working together throughout the 70 days.

Day 6: Torch Relay Will Visit Gloucester Cathedral and Severn Valley Railway on Journey from Cheltenham to Worcester

On Thursday 24 May the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay – presented by Coca-Cola, Lloyds TSB and Samsung – will travel from Cheltenham to Worcester. The Olympic Flame will travel 99.05 miles through 19 communities.

On Thursday 24 May the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay – presented by Coca-Cola, Lloyds TSB and Samsung – will travel from Cheltenham to Worcester. The Olympic Flame will travel 99.05 miles through 19 communities. 

• On Day 6 the Torch Relay will travel 99.05 miles
• 119 inspirational Torchbearers will carry the Flame
• Evening celebration to take place at Worcester County Cricket Ground
• Images from the day will be available to download from here throughout the day

119 Torchbearers will carry the Flame before it arrives at the Evening Celebration in Worcester where a cauldron will be lit to mark the culmination of the day’s festivities. After the celebrations have finished, the Flame will be transferred to a lantern and it will stay in Worcester overnight.

On Day 6 the Flame will be carried through the following communities:
Gloucester, Maisemore, Hartpury, Corse and Staunton, Ledbury, Bartestree, Lugwardine, Hereford, Leominster, Ludlow, Clee Hill, Cleobury Mortimer, Far Forest, Callow Hill, Bewdley, Kidderminster, Droitwitch Spa, Fernhill Heath and Worcester.

During the day the Flame will also visit a number of iconic landmarks including:
Gloucester Docks, where the Flame will be carried by 19-year-old George Livingstone-Thompson from Gloucester, who was nominated through the Coca-Cola Future Flames programme for his voluntary work for people with disabilities.

Gloucester Cathedral, where the Flame will be carried by aspiring fencer, Sophie Williams, who is 21-years-old from Cornwall, who was nominated for her extraordinary progress in the last two years.

Severn Valley Railway, where the Flame will be carried on the train from Bewdley to Kidderminster by 43-year-old Christopher Stokes from Kidderminster.

Other Torchbearers during the day will include:

Sharron Davies, who is carrying the Flame in Leominster in recognition of her Olympic Swimming career. Sharron has remained in the public eye as a commentator, presenter and active charity worker. She pioneered her own annual swimming event, Swim for Life, which involves over 2000 pools nationwide and helps raise money for many different causes.

Yasmin Boff, 12, from Evesham and carrying the Flame in Gloucester. Yasmin, who was nominated through the LOCOG campaign, is an exceptional talented young swimmer. Last year she broke the UK age record for the 50m backstroke and has won countless medals and trophies. She was recently selected to train with the Elite 2 swimming squad in Coventry and with the support and commitment of her family, she now trains there five times a week.

Robert Powell, 60, from Hereford, was nominated through the Lloyds TSB campaign. Robert is carrying the Flame in Hereford and has been selected thanks to his involvement with MS Society. Robert chairs his local MS Society branch and has raised tens of thousands of pounds through running and cycling.

Lucy Fellows, 15, from Worcestershire carrying the Flame in Ludlow. Despite suffering from a rare genetic condition called Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, Lucy is a full-time carer for her mother who suffers from a severe form of her own condition. Beyond being a carer, Lucy’s an A* student, an active member of the local community within her Girl Guides and Rangers, as well as a member of a local wildlife group. Lucy was nominated through the Samsung campaign.

Stuart Woodburn, 30, from Worcestershire and carrying the Flame in Ledbury. Stuart, who was nominated the through the LOCOG campaign, has worked at Aston Fields for four years, and works as a Year 5 form teacher as well as teaching: Director of KS2 English, Maths, P.E and HSSE (History, Geography and Religious Education). Throughout his career at our school, he's received outstanding performance from the head teacher and works to, not only support pupils and support other staff, but also inspire everyone at school, especially in sport.

Thomas Neathway, 28, from Worcestershire was nominated by Worcester City Council through the LOCOG campaign. Thomas, who will carry the Flame in Worcester, joined the Parachute Regiment in 2001 and is a veteran of multiple tours of Northern Ireland, Iraq & Afghanistan. On his last Afghan tour in 2008, Tom triggered a booby trap while covering his platoon moving forward. The blast took off both his feet and the severity of his wounds led to amputation of both legs and one arm.

The evening celebration will take place at Worcester County Cricket Ground from 4pm. The evening celebration will feature a variety of entertainment staged by LOCOG and the three Presenting Partners of the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay - Coca-Cola, Lloyds TSB and Samsung.

The line-up includes music from Labrinth, a dance troupe who will provide a unique fusion of street performance, theatre and sport and dance act Twist and Pulse. A locally recruited community choir will also perform.

Towards the end of the two-hour show, the last Torchbearer of the day - Sally Flood, from Bromsgrove who was nominated for her charity work - will light a celebration cauldron on stage at the event which will enable the Olympic Flame to be seen by the audience.
